Physiotherapy treatments in Milton Keynes

Acupuncture

We offer acupuncture at our clinic in Milton Keynes as an integrated treatment option alongside physiotherapy or sports rehab.

Acupuncture is particularly suitable for people living with chronic pain, such as from arthritis, fibromyalgia or a long-term injury, helping to reduce pain and inflammation and stimulating the body’s natural healing processes.

What to expect during an acupuncture session

While in a comfortable position, your physiotherapist gently inserts fine, sterile needles into specific points on your body, based on your unique needs. These points may be spread across different areas of your body, which is perfectly normal. Any discomfort felt when the needles are inserted is usually minimal.

Sometimes patients are so relaxed during treatment they fall asleep. If that happens to you, it’s completely fine.

How does acupuncture work?

The belief behind acupuncture is that when acupuncture needles are inserted into key points on the body, they stimulate the nervous system to release the body’s natural painkilling chemicals, such as endorphins, and trigger natural healing processes.

It's thought that acupuncture also promotes blood flow and oxygen delivery to affected areas. Improved blood flow supports healing and can reduce inflammation.

Some common questions about acupuncture

Acupuncture can be very helpful for easing chronic pain. And with less pain, you may feel more relaxed and able to move more freely, which has a positive impact on your sense of wellbeing and quality of life.

Here are our answers to some of the most common questions we get asked about acupuncture:

How do I know if acupuncture is right for me?

When you come for your physiotherapy assessment, your physiotherapist will determine whether acupuncture is right for you.

It is very much dependent on your injury or problem, and on any pre-existing conditions. We will tell you if we don’t think acupuncture is suitable for you.

What does acupuncture feel like?

Acupuncture is nothing like having an injection and the needles are considerably thinner. While a few patients don’t like the procedure, most report little or no discomfort.

Where there is discomfort, it may feel like a tingling sensation or a dull ache.

How many acupuncture sessions will I need?

This varies from person to person. Some people respond quickly, others may take a few treatments to respond, and a minority may not respond at all.

During your assessment, your physiotherapist will discuss expectations around the number of sessions you may need.

What should I wear for acupuncture?

Please wear loose clothing so your physiotherapist can access your skin. The needles cannot be applied through clothing. In some cases, you may need to remove items of clothing to enable access to certain areas of skin.

However, we always provide a towel to cover the parts of your body not being worked on.
