Physiotherapy treatments in Milton Keynes

Shockwave therapy

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive, highly effective treatment for a range of tendinopathies including tennis and golfer’s elbow, Achilles tendonitis, calcific tendinopathy, rotator cuff tendonitis and patella tendinopathy, as well as for plantar fasciitis.

We offer shockwave therapy as a supplement to physiotherapy or sports rehab. The combinations work extremely well.

What is shockwave therapy?

Shockwave therapy is a very effective treatment which directly targets the injured or damaged area.

It uses a special device to send low energy sound waves through the skin and directly into the tissue to jumpstart the body’s healing process and reduce pain.

The soundwaves work by increasing blood flow to the area, breaking down calcification, reducing inflammation and desensitising nerve endings.

What to expect during a session

During treatment at our Milton Keynes clinic, your physiotherapist first locates the area of pain as gently as possible with their hands, and then applies gel to your skin to help transmit the shockwaves into the tissue below. The shockwaves are delivered via a handheld device which is held against the treatment area.

Your physiotherapist monitors progress over the sessions, adjusting treatment as needed to maintain improvements.

Most people experience a marked improvement in pain and movement within just a few sessions.

Are you in pain or struggling with loss of tendon function? Is plantar fasciitis getting you down? If so, book an appointment so we can get you feeling much better!

Common questions about shockwave treatment

The benefits of shockwave therapy for tendinopathies and plantar fasciitis are becoming increasingly well known. Here are our answers to some of the most common questions we get asked about shockwave treatment.

Is shockwave therapy suitable for everyone?

While shockwave therapy is generally considered a safe and effective treatment, there are contraindications, such as pregnancy, cancer and blood clots, so it isn’t suitable for everyone.

Your physiotherapist will conduct a thorough assessment to determine if it is appropriate for you, considering factors such as tendon location, severity of symptoms and underlying medical conditions.

Isn’t it hard to treat tendinitis and plantar fasciitis?

Both have a bit of a reputation for lasting a while, particularly without treatment or appropriate rest.

However, we are known for our excellent results, even with chronic tendonitis or plantar fasciitis.

If you’ve had treatment elsewhere with limited success, come and see us!

Is shockwave therapy painful?

Some discomfort or a little pain may be experienced during treatment. However, the intensity can be adjusted to suit you and our physiotherapists ensure that any discomfort is within tolerable levels.

You may experience some swelling, redness, bruising or discomfort as a temporary response to the treatment, but this should start to resolve within 1 to 2 days after treatment.

What should I wear for shockwave treatment?

Your physio will need access to the treatment area so please wear loose clothing or shorts and a sleeveless vest, according to the area to be treated.
