Blood flow restriction (BRF) training
Blood flow restriction training is an innovative technique allowing you to reap the benefits of high-intensity strength training while working at a much lower intensity.
It’s ideal for people recovering from injury or surgery, or with limited mobility, as it strengthens muscles and boosts recovery with minimal stress on the body.

Boost your recovery and build strength safely
How BFR training works
BFR uses specialised smart cuffs, a bit like blood pressure cuffs, which partially restrict blood flow to targeted muscles during exercise. This creates a controlled reduction in oxygen, prompting large muscle fibres to produce metabolites which in turn drive muscle growth and repair. It’s very effective.
We offer blood flow restriction training alongside physiotherapy or sports injury rehab to help you recover faster from injury or surgery and build your strength safely.

Commonly asked questions about BFR training
Blood flow restriction training is a cutting-edge technique known for its ability to restore muscle function. As it’s a relatively new technique you may have lots of questions about it. If you can’t find the answers to your questions here, please do call us. We’re always happy to talk.
What will I do in a BFR training session?
During training, you’ll perform low-load exercises under our expert supervision, activating weak, injured or dysfunctional muscles without straining any areas that are vulnerable or still healing.
As you progress, your training plan is adapted to ensure your ongoing improvement and to match your recovery or performance goals.
Is blood flow restriction training safe?
BFR training is generaly safe but there are some contraindications, meaning it isn’t suitable for everyone. Your physiotherapist will carry out an assessment to identify if it’s appropriate for you.
For best results and to minimise any risk, we closely supervise BFR training and only use specialised cuffs.
Can I do BFR training at home?
Yes you can, although we don’t recommend the use of elastic bands which are often used for at-home training.
We can tell you where to buy your own smart cuffs or, for our physiotherapy patients, we may be able to lend you our own.
Is blood flow restriction training painful?
You may feel some discomfort from the pressure of the cuff or from aching muscles as you work but it shouldn’t be painful.
Often there is little or no muscle soreness afterwards.
